New York City’s TanDa THE ROPES Former Moomba co-owner Chris Russell ditched the velvet-rope concept for this Asian-fusion eatery. Now, both levels of the restaurant (upstairs has funky backlit Confucius paintings and dim red lighting) fill up with anyone hungry enough for Balinese roasted duck, seared beef carpaccio on green papaya salad, and the restaurant’s decadent chocolate chip cookies with warm coconut milk. MAKING THE SCENE Justin Timberlake, Beyonce Knowles, Mel Gibson, Rob Thomas, Rachel Griffiths, Ellen DeGeneres, and Tara Reid. AFTER HOURS Stay past 11 p.m. and TanDa morphs into a model-filled lounge with a DJ spinning everything from Barry White to Asian trip-hop. NEW WORLD ORDER ”One thing I learned is that if you’re ultraexclusive you exclude almost everybody,” says Russell. ”We’re not p — -ing people off every night here. I’m not telling my lifelong friends they can’t come in because Leo doesn’t want to sit next to them. We’re all about hospitality now.”
