Courtney Love will play Lady Macbeth. The litigious singer-actress will star opposite Scottish actor Peter Mullan in the Shakespeare drama
Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth was a woman whose career ambitions for her husband drove him to violent, ultimately self-destructive behavior. Now, Billboard reports, Courtney Love will play her in an upcoming film. (Insert typecasting joke here.) Scottish actor Peter Mullan (”My Name Is Joe”) will play the starring role, and actor Vincent Regan will make his directing debut, the trade publication reports.
Love has been busy discussing the role with fans on the message boards of her defunct band Hole’s website, noting that she’s been studying other actresses’ interpretations of the character, and saying that she’s ”humbled beyond belief” to have beaten what she says is a number of Oscar-caliber actresses for the part. She’ll next be seen on screen in next month’s thriller ”Trapped,” opposite Kevin Bacon and Charlize Theron.
In the meantime, reports last week suggest that Love is close to settling her legal disputes with Universal Music Group and with her late husband Kurt Cobain’s Nirvana bandmates. Billboard says representatives for Love and Universal both indicated that a pretrial settlement was likely in Love’s suit to get Hole out of its seven-CD contract with the label (the band released only two UMG albums, and Hole has broken up since Love filed suit). Love has also reportedly made an offer to settle with Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl over her suit to dissolve the limited liability corporation that controls Nirvana’s music.
