Director Michael Haneke (The Piano Teacher) depends perhaps too heavily on the viewer to stitch together a series of vignettes that eventually interweave (though they never quite connect). There are some amazing moments, however — French kids find a joyous African drumbeat, a disconsolate farmer shoots his cattle, a woman (Binoche) is harrassed by an Arab on the metro — that justify the effort, and there’s something gratifying about having to work a little to enjoy a movie.
