In this five-part miniseries, artist-writer Pope conjures up a future in which marijuana is legal (sold under the brand name ”Graz”) and used to help keep wage-slave denizens of a blighted urban center fuzzed and compliant. The story begins with a corpse and moves backward, telling us how ”the dead girl” arrived at her fate. A major character is a stripper specializing in ”Gastro”: In the future, we won’t just know what a woman on stage looks like naked, but also ”What’s boiling inside her stomach?” and gastro-technology enables this intrusion. Sound depressing? Yes, but so what? Pope’s beautifully harsh slash-and-burn drawings, combined with terse, funny dialogue, show us he’s giving us 100% of his talent.
