It may seem like a tortuous journey from costumed prog oddity to refined pop elder statesman, but listening to these spiffy reissues back-to-back reveals a surprisingly logical progression. From the unfocused 1977 eponymous debut (song you know: ”Solsbury Hill”) to the identically titled mid-period highlight third album (songs you know: ”Games Without Frontiers,” ”Biko”) and 1986’s promise fulfiller, So (songs you know: most of ’em), Gabriel sharpens his writing and expands his sonic scope. Atmospheric soundtracks Birdy and Passion nicely round out the collection.
