SPLITS Maybe it was the mother-in-law. On May 24, horse breeder and trainer John Endicott, 35, filed for divorce from E! red-carpet schmoozer Melissa Rivers, 33, his wife of four years, citing irreconcilable differences. He seeks joint custody of their 1-year-old son, Edgar Cooper.
AILING Diva interrupted. Diana Ross, 58, checked herself into Malibu’s Promises rehab center May 20. The singer’s spokesman said Ross needed to ”clear up some personal issues” (otherwise unspecified) before embarking on her summer tour, set to kick off June 26 in Germany.
COURTS Hoping Star magazine will stop and think about what it tried to do to her, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, 60, filed a second lawsuit March 26 against the tabloid, this time in New Mexico (as first reported in late May). She claims Star defamed her in a December 2000 article suggesting she had a drinking problem. Franklin’s attorney wouldn’t say why he dropped the first suit (filed in Michigan) in February, but called New Mexico’s libel laws ”very well settled.” A Star rep declined to comment…. On May 28, rapper Snoop Dogg, 30, pleaded no contest in Oberlin, Ohio, to pot-possession charges stemming from a 2001 traffic stop. Snoop was ordered to pay a $250 fine and received a 30-day suspended jail sentence. The rapper’s rep didn’t return calls for comment.
AWARDS At the 56th Tony Awards June 2, Thoroughly Modern Millie picked up six awards, including Best Musical and best lead musical actress for ingenue Sutton Foster, 27. Edward Albee’s drama The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? won Best Play. Sitcom vet John Lithgow, 56, took his second Tony, for his lead role in the tuner Sweet Smell of Success. And beloved stage matriarch Elaine Stritch, 77, snagged her first Tony, for her one-woman show.
DEATHS Hollywood mogul Lew Wasserman, 89, of complications from a stroke, June 3, in L.A. (See Legacy on page 66.)… Journalist-author Mildred Wirt Benson, 96, who created teen sleuth Nancy Drew and, as Carolyn Keene, wrote 23 books in the franchise, of congestive heart failure and respiratory failure, May 28, in Toledo, Ohio.
