The Vatican vs. cross-wearing celebs. As if His Holiness hasn’t got enough on his mind, the Pope has turned fashion critic, chastising such stars as Elizabeth Hurley and Jennifer Aniston for wearing jewel-encrusted crosses, claiming they violate religious notions of poverty. True, crosses have become trendy (”I am selling more than ever,” says L.A.-based vintage jeweler Neil Lane), but the Pope may have been hasty in deeming gems anti-Catholic. As Lane notes: ”I just bought an amazing 19th-century cross with amethysts and diamonds that belonged to a bishop.” Amen.
