Hype Williams: The Videos Vol. 1

C-

Hype Williams has made a career out of turning hip-hop’s gaudiest sounds into an even gaudier vision. Don’t contemplate whether this is worthy of canonization: Just watch as shiny-suited duo Mase and Puffy toss cash into the Vegas night in ”Feel So Good,” or as Jay-Z romps through ”Big Pimpin’,” surely the most expensive soft-core short ever. The inclusion of Busta Rhymes’ ”Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See” proves Williams has depth, though you’d never know it from the DVD’s director’s commentary (in which Williams reveals that, among other things, Busta ”is more than an artist, more than a talent, he’s a phenomenon”). Wonder how he got the nickname…
