The Lady and the Duke

B+

Now that ”Brotherhood of the Wolf” and ”Amélie” have welcomed digital effects into the French art house, 82-year-old auteur Eric Rohmer is taking full advantage. He shot this true-life tale (his 23rd film) of a Scottish noblewoman stuck in Paris during the French Revolution with his actors standing in front of a blue screen, ”Star Wars”-style. Later, he inserted painted backgrounds of late-18th-century scenery. Voilá! Eye candy you can feel snooty about.
