Just as Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones are dancing around traditional definitions of the jazz vocal art, this Swiss/Dutch newcomer offers her own unique variation. Abbuehl digs deep, but keeps her Northern cool, with an introspective song collection including Carla Bley’s cerebral tunes (”Seven”) and Abbuehl’s settings of e.e. cummings poems and a jazz-tinged Hindustani piece. Her version of ”’Round Midnight” alone wows: Cooed against the hum of harmonium, it must be the year’s freshest take on the timeless standard. A-
