Back on her own Mississippi turf after a Montana excursion, Nevada Barr’s District Ranger-cum-detective Anna Pigeon finds enemies close to home in Hunting Season. As she and her still-married beau, Sheriff Paul Davidson, dance delicately around a more permanent relationship, her struggles with her good-ol’-boy deputy continue. Throw a bizarre sex crime into the mix, add a gaggle of redneck hunters, and you’ve got the 10th installment of a suspense series that’s wearing a little thin—though at least Barr maintains her entertainment quotient with great peripheral characters like the dainty, tough-talking Southern woman who demonstrates ”a willingness to defend her man tooth and lacquered acrylic nail.”
