Ace of Basehead
You Oughta Know About...Citizen Cope
— MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF HIS SOUND G. Love + (Basehead – PM Dawn)
— WHY WE THINK YOU SHOULD BUY HIS ALBUM: The onetime DJ for art-rap crew Basehead writes stellar, personal songs that fold in hip-hop, soul, reggae, and irresistible pop hooks.
— WHY HE THINKS YOU SHOULD BUY HIS ALBUM ”Because it’s from the heart,” says Cope, a.k.a. Clarence Greenwood, ”and otherwise, I’ll be poor.”
— WHY HE’S NOT ON TOP 40 RADIO Give it a chance, man! The first single, ”If There’s Love,” came out Dec. 11, and MTV2 recently started playing the video as part of its ”Artists to Watch for 2002” series. ”I don’t have a problem with Top 40. [My music] just hasn’t gotten there yet,” says Greenwood.
— WHY HE THINKS YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO HIM INSTEAD OF CREED ”There’s room for everything. I’m doing my thing and it’s not anybody else’s fault if my record doesn’t sell. It’s not Creed’s fault, it’s not Britney Spears’ fault,” he says.
— WHAT’S NEXT? A brief tour with DreamWorks labelmate Nelly Furtado starting Jan. 30, followed by some solo dates. ”I’m really gonna concentrate on breaking this record,” he says.
— WHAT HE’LL BE DOING IN 10 YEARS ”Writing, producing, and making records. I’d love to help develop other talent, maybe write scores for movies,” says Greenwood. ”I definitely see myself in a good place.”
