BEHIND EMMY LINES After two false starts, The 53rd Annual Emmy Awards (18th) finally happened–and managed to take second in its slot with 17.1 million viewers, on one of the most competitive nights of programming in years. While the “subdued” awards show was down from the 21.8 million fans who tuned in last year, perhaps that’s because the rest of the country was watching the nail-biting finale of the World Series (1st). The Diamondbacks’ ninth-inning comeback made it the most watched baseball game since 1991. Almost lost in the Sunday-night shuffle was part 1 of NBC’s acclaimed Holocaust miniseries Uprising (30th). Speaking of feeling left out, the fifth-season premiere of Fox’s Ally McBeal (42nd) managed to pull in only 11 million viewers, nearly 3 million fewer than the premiere of its hipper, younger lead-in, Boston Public (29th).
