THE CLOSET

Leave it to the French to invent a new genre: the comedy of political correctness. In director Francis Veber’s clever film, a Milquetoasty accountant at a condom factory (Auteuil) pretends to be gay to avoid being fired. After he gains sudden notoriety (and popularity), the homophobic, rugby-playing personnel director (Depardieu) must befriend him to save his own skin. The repercussions are tres amusant, culminating in a hilarious assembly-line climax. But the subtitles are so small, you’ll wish you had a bigger TV — or had paid more attention in French class.
