These days, you have to wonder why people rent the videos they do. Case in point: the terrorism-tinged thriller Swordfish (the big debut at No. 1), starring John Travolta. Perhaps it’s that action flicks offer an easy route to escapism. Or maybe renters draw solace from familiar faces like Travolta’s. (It couldn’t have been the critical reception.) Meanwhile, Shrek (No. 2) saw plenty of green as it took in over $110 million in its first weekend–the biggest video premiere since The Lion King bowed back in ’95. For the record, that’s a better opening than any theatrical flick in the history of movies. (It’s okay, we’re somewhat shaken by this too.)
