Andrea Barrett recommends Lucky Us, a 2001 novel by Joan Silber (Algonquin, $22.95)

I’ve had a hard time finding anything I wanted to read since Sept. 11: Too many things make me feel, What’s the point? This taut, beautifully written, deeply felt love story reminded me all over again what a great consolation a good book can be. A quiet older man meets an effervescent young woman; they connect and their relationship grows. Learning that one is HIV-positive while the other is negative, they make an accommodation to that fact. The story is that simple and somehow–amazingly!–funny and charming and full of life.

Andrea Barrett’s most recent novel is The Voyage of the Narwhal. A new collection of stories, Servants of the Map, will be published in February.
