Hurray for the red, white, and blue. Manhattan-based designer Catherine Malandrino served up plenty of stars and stripes for her fall/winter collection of sophisticated but streetwise cashmere sweaters, chiffon dresses, ties, bags, and belts. But it’s her handmade American-flag tanks and tees, priced under $100, that are flying out of her Hollywood boutique and chichi stores around the world, including NYC’s Henri Bendel, Le Bon Marche in Paris, and London’s Harvey Nichols.

”I’m very influenced by American life and pop culture,” says the French-born Malandrino. ”It’s a very charismatic flag, and it speaks about freedom and individuality. I could not use any other kind!” Among those displaying patriotic flair: Madonna dons the top on her current world tour; Dior’s John Galliano came calling after spotting the shirt in British Vogue; and celeb clotheshorses Winona Ryder, Halle Berry, Courtney Love, and Sarah Jessica Parker have all pledged their allegiance.
