Talk about chance and good fortune: By some happy accident, the filmmakers commissioned a slew of new material from ballad-oriented, B-list acts who just happen to record for Columbia — the very label releasing this soundtrack. Serendipity in action! The album’s largely a stultifying sampler of Columbia’s adult-contemporary bench (Evan & Jaron, Wood, Heather Nova), interspersed with occasional cred from non-Sony triple-A giants. When Nick Drake incongruously appears, it’s like a cry for help from the movie’s music supervisor: ”Help! I’m trapped in a fortune-cookie factory and can’t get out!”
