To Be Someone
Music fans of a certain era will instantly recognize the title of Voss’ novel as that of a song by the Jam, and the book shares a sense of nostalgia with its namesake. Helena Nicholls, a former pop star and radio DJ recovering from an accident, has compiled a playlist of the songs most important to her, and the explanation for every tune’s inclusion comprises its own chapter in the novel. It’s a good gimmick, but one that wears thin. Touted as a female version of High Fidelity, ”Someone” is not as sharp or as funny as Nick Hornby’s book, but it’s worth a spin.
