COPS AND ROBBERS

While MGM suggested that its Bruce Willis-Billy Bob Thornton crime caper Bandits was robbed of a No. 1 debut due to news of anthrax threats, those same events didn’t seem to discourage audiences from heading to Denzel Washington’s more violent Training Day. Elsewhere, SNL geek Chris Kattan survived an onslaught of critical brickbats as his creaky star vehicle Corky Romano rolled up $9 million; Iron Monkey–a restored 1993 kung fu flick–crouched and hid at No. 6 despite having the second-highest per-screen average among the top films; and The Others finally fell out of the top 10.
