Bridget Jones's Diary
Bridget, the 32-year-old singleton (or ”spinster,” as she’s uncharitably called), drinks too much, smokes too much, eats too much, and can’t find Mr. Right in Bridget Jones’s Diary. Renée Zellweger gamely carries the British accent (and the 20 pounds she gained for the role), embodying the desperate Everywoman-ness of author Helen Fielding’s appealing heroine. It’s no wonder Colin Firth’s unlikely Mr. Right (Mr. Darcy, actually, with a nod to Ms. Austen) and Hugh Grant’s deliciously caddish Mr. Wrong come to blows over her.
