Jay-Z rules the charts for a third week
MUSIC CHARTS Album sales continued their post-September 11 decline this week. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys continued to hold the top two slots but sold fewer records, and the only new record in Billboard’s top 10 was the compilation ”Totally Hits 2001.” Jay-Z’s ”The Blueprint,” the top CD three weeks running, sold 173,650 copies, according to SoundScan, nearly 100,000 fewer than last week. Keys’ ”Songs in A Minor” followed with sales of 139,675, down 13,000 from last week. ”Hits” opened at No. 3, selling 138,825 units. Leaping three spots to No. 4 was Enya‘s ”Day Without Rain” (114,275 copies). Dropping two spots to No. 5 was Nickelback‘s ”Silver Side Up” (110,600 sold).
Climbing two slots to No. 6 was P.O.D.‘s ”Satellite.” Linkin Park‘s ”Hybrid Theory” was No. 7. Reenterting the top 10 were Staind‘s ”Break the Cycle (No. 8), ”NOW That’s What I Call Music! Vol. 7” (No. 10), and Usher‘s ”8701,” which enjoyed the week’s biggest jump, up 14 spaces to No. 9.
HEALTH WATCH Sharon Stone‘s brain hemorrhage may be more serious than doctors initially thought. When Stone was hospitalized Saturday in San Francisco, doctors believed she had suffered an aneurysm tiny enough not to require treatment, but they have kept her in the hospital for tests because they still don’t know what caused the condition. They now say she has subarachnoid hemorrhage, a bleeding between the brain and an outer membrane, an ailment that causes 5 to 10 percent of all strokes. Stone said in a statement that she’s undergoing another angiogram tomorrow. ”That should be the final determination, at which point every part of my anatomy will have been photographed in detail.” Guess Stone’s sense of humor is intact — that last line was a ”Basic Instinct” joke, right?
HITCH DITCH Looks like Babs won’t be singing at Minnie Driver‘s wedding anytime soon, since Driver and Josh Brolin have broken off their engagement. ”Minnie Driver and Josh Brolin have decided to cancel their wedding plans,” her publicist said in a terse statement. ”Their decision is mutual and amicable.” Barbara Streisand would have been Driver’s stepmother-in-law, having married the groom’s father, James Brolin, in 1998. Josh Brolin was married before, to actress Alice Adair. They have two children.
