Since Sept. 11, the year 2001 has been cast in a tragic light. In these past weeks, photographs have chronicled our sadness and shock. But as we move forward, it’s comforting to remember that pictures also celebrate laughter and peace. Here, then, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY presents its second annual Photo Issue. This collection of our favorite images from 2001 has beauty (Angelina Jolie), calm (Bradley Whitford and his baby), and whimsy (Morgan Freeman and a kitten). New this year: the photographers’ galleries, featuring notable images from four of the industry’s most artful lensers (Mary Ellen Mark, Dan Winters, Harry Benson, and Brigitte Lacombe); and Candid Hollywood, in which we provided celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker and Moby with digital cameras to document the past summer’s work and play. The most important photos of the year? No. But we hope this issue will be a blissful reminder that pictures, like our lives, are made up of both shadow and light.
