One of the things you learn after watching 171 episodes of Friends is the show’s writers have Phoebe-esque memory banks. Here are some of the most notable Friendly flubs:
FAMILY TIES In 10, ”The One With Mrs. Bing,” Joey says it’s never okay to kiss moms, though aunts and sisters are possible. But Tribbiani’s initial reaction to Chandler’s bussing his sis (58, ”The One Where Chandler Can’t Remember Which Sister”) is not so familial.
WHO’S FIRST? In 149, ”The One With Rachel’s Assistant,” Chandler reveals that Ross slept with a cleaning woman in college. But in 27, ”The One With Phoebe’s Husband,” Ross makes a big deal about how Carol was the only woman he’d slept with, until Julie.
CAR TROUBLE Ross’ dad says he got his Porsche when he turned 50 (39, ”The One Where Joey Moves Out”). But in 87, ”The One With All the Rugby,” Ross mentions how, when he was 4, he ”washed my dad’s Porsche with rocks.” But that would mean 63-year-old Elliott Gould is actually playing a septuagenarian.
SPELL CHECK When Ross sends Rachel a wedding invitation (93, ”The One With the Invitation”), the envelope is addressed ”Rachel Greene.” You’d think he’d know the love of his life spells it ”Green.”
TO THE DOGS Chandler has a thing against pooches, as we find out in 153, ”The One Where Chandler Doesn’t Like Dogs.” Interesting, then, that he was perfectly calm when Phoebe toted around her mom’s puppy (83, ”The One With Phoebe’s Uterus”).
EYE WARY Rachel is freaked out by eyeballs, to the point where she can’t even look when someone touches their own eye (118, ”The One With Joey’s Big Break”). But in 80, ”The One With Chandler in a Box,” Rachel readily comes to Monica’s aid when she gets an ice fragment lodged in her peeper — even taking Monica to the eye doctor’s office and joking about jamming a pen into her eye.
CHANCY MEETINGS Who knew whom, and when did they know them? As we learn in 104, ”The One With All the Thanksgivings,” Chandler and Rachel met several times at the Gellers’ house during Thanksgiving breaks while Chandler was in college and Rachel was in high school. So why is it that they have no idea who the other one is when they run into each other at the pre-Central Perk bar in 53, ”The One With the Flashback”? Guess it’s not just the writers who have short-term memory issues.
