THE DOG DAYS

At the tail end OF summer, the final frame before Labor Day produced barely a whimper as a litter of pups couldn’t even take a bite out of three-week-old Pie (the first flick to swipe the top spot for three consecutive weeks since Spy Kids). The alpha dog among the weekend’s runty challengers was Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back–his best opening yet. More mutt-like, however, were the bowwow bows of Freddie Prinze Jr.’s baseball opus, Summer Catch, two tepid debuts from veteran auteurs John Carpenter (Ghosts of Mars) and Woody Allen (The Curse of the Jade Scorpion), and the bubble-bursting Bubble Boy.
