Colapinto’s engaging first novel is an absurd, oddly moralistic, and pretty darn funny how-not-to tale of literary celebrity. Aspiring author Cal Cunningham is a victim not only of a nasty case of writer’s block but of having his life appropriated by his nerdy law-student roommate, who writes a novel based on Cal’s sexploits and is then (conveniently) killed in a car accident. Cal passes the manuscript off as his own and becomes rich and famous — but it’s not exactly happily ever after. We won’t give anything away about the people who don’t wish Cal well and the inventive ways in which they threaten him, but the result is a book that’s a rare and successful mix of spoof and suspense.
