Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. The M&M boys. The Yankee legends who made twin bids for Babe Ruth’s all-time home run record in 1961. The Mick was dopey — a cocksure boozer, womanizer, and klieg light of charisma. Roger was sheepish — a Fargo boy and family man, implosive and awkward. Together Jane (Mantle) and Pepper (Maris) bring spark and humor to the two titans, but the star here is director Billy Crystal: 61* is not only his best work in almost a decade, but damn near a baseball classic. And that, my friends, is coming from a Red Sox fan.
