SOUTH OF HEAVEN, WEST OF HELL
An odd outlaw fantasy from the mind of country musician-cum-film director Yoakam. The action unfolds slowly in a desolate 1900s frontier town with Yoakam playing a marshal marked for death. Rather than stick with a simple shoot-’em-up setup, the film instead floats the possibility that everyone in this hazy landscape is already dead, drifting in a dusty purgatory. Despite his best existential intentions, the result is an overly indulgent wasteland of a Western.
