Over the course of a decade, Stereolab’s sound has evolved at the pace — as singer Laetitia Sadier might say — of an escargot rather than a lapin. The same can be said of this latest batch of songs, which have a languid, draggy feel, hiding the band’s famously clever melodies inside flabby compositions. It’s evolution without improvement — a disappointment compared with their action-packed output of the late ’90s.
