In the ’80s, Anderson parlayed her underground cred as a multimedia performance artist into a modestly successful pop career, only to revert back into the world of arts grants and Artforum in the ’90s. Her first overtly overground effort in 12 years will sound reassuringly familiar to fans, proffering, as it does, more emotionally detached, musically chilly meditations on humans being. But despite an occasional dip into buzzy techno waters, Life is more retread then reinvention.
