The Funky Precedent Vol. 2

Some might claim hip-hop is lost in a wash of banal beats and rote rhymes. But there’s a thriving eclectic, imaginative underground scene, typified by this series of regional sets. Last year’s ”Vol. 1” focused on L.A., bringing fresh faces Black Eyed Peas and Jurassic 5 to the surface. ”Vol. 2” finds Bay Area’s Live Human laying down glorious scratch-infused jazz on one track, while rapper Azeem spits superb poetry on another. Hopefully, these innovators will set a precedent for rap albums to come.
