The debut feature of Reggie Rock Bythewood — writer of Spike Lee’s ”Get on the Bus” — first screened on HBO in February 2000; thus its satirical analysis of race and network television anticipated that of Lee’s ”Bamboozled.” In fact, their only salient differences accrue to Dancing in September‘s utter lack of style, bite, wit, and pace. The best thing on screen is Nicole Ari Parker, who plays a sad-eyed sitcom writer learning the difficulty of maintaining both her Nielsen ratings and her self-respect.
