In Tim Burton’s underimagined remake, the apes certainly have character, notably Tim Roth as a fascist chimpanzee and Helena Bonham Carter, all cooey caressing sweetness, as Ari, an animal-rights activist who, for some reason, has been stuck with Brenda Vaccaro’s hair. It may or may not be one of the film’s overdeliberate zoological ironies that Mark Wahlberg, as the spacewrecked Air Force pilot who leads a band of humans in revolt, comes off as a far less interesting form of primate. There are amusing moments, but Burton drenches the film in monotonous darkness, and what the human race seems most in need of being saved from here is the perils of threadbare screenwriting.
