Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros, Global a Go-Go

On ”Bhindi Bhagee,” Strummer answers a musician’s least favorite question: ”What’s your music like?” ”It’s um…well, it’s kinda like…” he stammers in his signature rasp, then gleefully rattles off a list of ingredients. That verse comes closest to describing the singer’s shape-shifting muse. With his ragtag new band, the ex-Clash frontman has become a sort of punk-rock Paul Simon, unself-consciously erasing all stylistic borders on this aptly titled disc. Not easy to describe, but worth repeat visits.
