Everyone knows the premise: Narrator Jake Barnes has had his ”manhood” shot off in the First World War, which makes him a, well, less than ideal candidate to run off with true love/lush Lady Brett Ashley. Hemingway’s prose is so spare, sometimes it seems more like shorthand than writing. Then he’ll throw some totally devastating line into the mix. ”It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night is another thing.”
