A wealthy, greedy forty-niner (Mullan) persuades the head surveyor (Bentley) of the Central Pacific Railroad to run the gilded tracks through his northern California town. But the daughter and wife whom the miner traded 20 years earlier for a rich piece of land threaten to complicate matters by returning home armed with a bevy of dark secrets. Even the breathtaking landscape and lush cinematography can’t make up for standard-issue plot developments and painfully trite dialogue. Like fool’s gold, The Claim is pretty to look at but worth little.
