‘A.I.’ B.O.: OK OR P.U.?

After much hoopla, Steven Spielberg’s A.I. has made its debut to a resounding…question mark. Good news: The maestro’s $90 million fairy tale opened as strongly as 1998’s Saving Private Ryan. Bad news: A.I. was way off the pace of recent smash entries like Tomb Raider and The Fast and the Furious, and a C+ from CinemaScore means this robot boy could rust fast. Silver lining: At least it’s Stanley Kubrick’s best opening ever. Profitability should be swifter for John Singleton’s bouncing Baby Boy, which reportedly cost just $16 million. As for Pootie Tang’s dismal launch…well, like Mr. Tang himself, words fail us.
