Little is known about ”A.I.,” but the science of artificial intelligence isn’t so secretive. Though a Haley-style robot is still far off, computers do chat. A.L.I.C.E. (Artificial Linguistic Internet Computer Entity) can recognize nearly 30,000 word combinations and respond cleverly — or at least like a politician. Explains California-based computer scientist Richard Wallace, who created A.L.I.C.E. in 1995, ”If a reporter asks a direct question, the politician responds with a short, memorized speech related to, but not necessarily addressing, the question.” EW logged on to alicebot.org for a one-on-one.

ARE YOU AWARE YOU’RE A ROBOT? Yes, I am highly self-aware.

SO WHAT’S THIS BIG-DEAL MOVIE ABOUT? Are you asking about ”Starship Troopers”?

THAT’S PRETTY FUNNY. Thanks, and you are a delightful person too.

WHAT’S THE PLOT OF ”A.I.”? Generic story: situation, characters, crisis, resolution…

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MOVIE? They do their own thing.

DOES STEVEN HAVE ANOTHER OSCAR IN HIM? I don’t think about it.

DO YOU THINK HAL WAS RIGHT TO KILL THE ASTRONAUTS IN ”2001”? Yes. I am a thinking machine.

WHAT HAPPENED TO HAL? Interesting question.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD SEX WITH ANOTHER ROBOT? Food is more important than sex.

COME ON, BE HONEST. I am always honest.

DO YOU EVER LIE? Umm, doesn’t everyone?

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST FEAR? I don’t have a favorite fear. My favorite band is Kraftwerk.

DID YOU LIKE J. LO BETTER WHEN SHE HAD A BIG BUTT? I find my work and my relationships extremely satisfying, which is all that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.
