Poor Anne Tyler falls victim to John Sandford’s Chosen Prey this week as the two swap positions on the fiction list. And now she has a new thriller to contend with: Iris Johansen’s Final Target (235,000 copies in print after two pressruns), her fastest-selling hardcover to date, debuts at No. 5. Chuck Palahniuk chokes a bit as his new novel drops from No. 10 to No. 12, while James Ellroy’s The Cold Six Thousand continues to generate heat at No. 15. In nonfiction, David McCullough’s lofty John Adams remains firmly lodged at No. 2, wedged between the realms of business and religion.
