Jessica Simpson’s second album should have been called ”Relentless.” Exploiting every cliche in the pop 2001 handbook — florid ballads seemingly formulated for movie soundtracks, a pallid duet with Marc Anthony, derivative R&B-lite — it quite literally hits you baby, and more than one time. Yes, Simpson can sing, in that talent-show manner, but her chops are ultimately as meaningless as the bombast around her. Well, perhaps not entirely purposeless: With its refrain of ”I know I’m meant to say no,” the title track and single could easily be recycled for a New Virginity ad campaign.
