There are a few good reasons to enlist in this special-edition version of Rob Reiner’s military courtroom drama, so let’s count ’em off, shall we, maggot? (Sir, yes, sir!) (1) Tom Cruise gives the best performance of his career that doesn’t involve prancing around his living room in underwear to Bob Seger tunes. (2) How often do you actually get to see the late character actor J.T. Walsh play a good guy? (3) The scenes between Cruise and Jack Nicholson are positively electric, especially when Jack’s Colonel Jessep dresses down Lieutenant Kaffee for his lily-white choice in military fashion. (4) Confuse your friends by watching the entire film in Portuguese! (5) The 35-minute documentary ”Code of Conduct” is mere basic training for the more engrossing ”From Stage to Screen” feature, in which Reiner and writer Aaron Sorkin discuss the hurdles of adapting the Broadway play to movie form. (6) Finally, Kevin Bacon as a Marine? Genius!
