In F.W. Murnau’s take on the myth of the soul-selling scientist, the hero summons Satan’s aid to find a cure for the plague and then bargains for eternal youth. Drunk on immortality, Faust debauches an innocent lass with tragic consequences. Though Kino’s digitally remastered edition grants Murnau’s play of shadows full expressionistic oomph, its real seduction is Jannings’ turn as Mephisto. His plumply repugnant devil emits the sweet stench of brimstone.
