It’s no surprise when an Oprah book club pick hits the best-seller list. But when the talk-show host chooses a serious work of nonfiction, something she’s done only once before, the publishing world takes notice. This month’s pick, Stolen Lives: Twenty Years in a Desert Jail (577,500 copies in print after five pressruns), climbs to No. 4 this week. Malika Oufkir, who spent two decades in a Moroccan prison, appeared on the Today show, 60 Minutes, and The Rosie O’Donnell Show when her book was first launched in April. Thanks to Oprah, the author can put her promoting days behind her and enjoy some newfound freedom.
