Director E. Elias Merhige’s quirky, imaginative look at the making of the silent horror film Nosferatu comes alive whenever the Oscar-nominated Dafoe, sporting freakishly long fingernails and pointy ears, slithers on screen. He’s deliciously creepy as actor Max Schreck, who really got into character to play the bloodsucker for obsessive director F.W. Murnau (Malkovich). But despite eerie black-and-white re-creations of Nosferatu’s most famous scenes, Vampire offers fewer thrills than the classic that inspired it.
