GOLDEN TOOL

ATOOL FAN AND HIS MONEY are soon parted, especially when it’s been four years since the band’s last bundle of joy. Lateralus debuted at No. 1, putting a spring in the step of 555,000 happy customers. Some of the other layabouts debuting in the top 10 were back after extended vacations too. It had been a five-year hiatus for Weezer, who were propelled to No. 4 by 215,000 devotees with good memories. Depeche Mode, entering at No. 8 on sales of 115,000, had been away for four years. Back after shorter absences were Missy Elliott, hooking 251,000 with the No. 2 So Addictive, and R.E.M., waking 127,000 dreamers for a No. 6 bow.
