GREENWORKS

Rival studios came down with a nasty case of ogrephobia over the weekend, as Shrek turned out to be a green machine. The fractured fairy tale’s $42.3 million represents the best opening ever for DreamWorks. But Shrek’s reign over the kingdom should be short: Next weekend, Disney opens the (Michael) Bay doors, carpet bombing theaters with Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile, Moulin Rouge kicked up a nearly obscene $83,770 per screen in just two theaters in New York City and L.A., suggesting a potential surprise counterprogramming hit when the Nicole Kidman-Ewan McGregor extravaganza opens wide June 1.
