AILING Former matinee idol Ryan O’Neal, 60, was recently diagnosed with chronic leukemia. His spokeswoman says ”it’s treatable and he’s doing well.” Ironically, O’Neal played a man who lost his wife (Ali MacGraw) to leukemia in the ’70s weeper Love Story….Grammy nominee Jill Scott, 29, temporarily bailed from an opening slot on the last U.S. leg of Sting’s current tour after she was hospitalized for a lung infection May 6 in Philadelphia. The R&B singer was released the next day….Former Beatle George Harrison, 58, recently had a cancerous growth removed from one of his lungs at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. According to a May 3 statement, the former smoker made a full recovery.

DEALS On May 8, NBC News president Andrew Lack, 53, was named president and COO of the network. He replaces 15-year leader Bob Wright, 58, who becomes chairman of NBC and vice chair of parent General Electric. An NBC vet since 1993, Lack is the second news exec to be promoted at the net of late. In December, Today exec producer Jeff Zucker became NBC entertainment prez.

ARRESTS Cowabunga, dude! Former Real World: New Orleans castmate Jamie Murray, 23, was arrested May 5 in San Francisco on a misdemeanor trespassing charge after bungee-jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. At his June court date, Murray faces fines of up to $10,000. Murray says that he jumped ”to send a positive message to young people” considering suicide.

COURTS On May 2, superstar Tom Cruise, 38, filed a $100 million defamation suit against gay porn star and ”erotic wrestler” Kyle Bradford (né Chad Slater), 25. The suit cites the French mag Actustar, in which Bradford allegedly claimed he had an affair with the actor. (Cruise denies he’s gay, adding that the report could damage his career, ”particularly since he tends to play parts calling for heterosexual romance and action adventure.”) In a statement, Bradford said he never made the comments or spoke to Actustar….Also that day, Cruise’s estranged wife, Nicole Kidman, 33, requested joint legal custody but sole physical custody of the couple’s two children, Isabella, 8, and Conor, 6. Asserting she was pregnant by Cruise and suffered a miscarriage earlier this year, Kidman calls Cruise’s February divorce suit ”a shock” and says she ”urged him not to leave but to enter marriage counseling.” She also claims Cruise ”said his decision was final.” In a statement, Cruise’s lawyer said that Kidman ”has always known exactly why the parties are divorcing” and that Cruise would provide her with half their community property, totaling ”tens of millions of dollars.”…And now, some naked news. On May 3, singer Cedric Hailey, 31, a.k.a. K-Ci of R&B duo K-Ci & Jo-Jo, pleaded no contest to four misdemeanor charges of lewd conduct stemming from a December 2000 L.A. concert in which he allegedly exposed himself. Hailey faces up to six months in jail at his June 5 sentencing.
