Thank heaven for festering desire, forestalled hope, and romantic torture — or this U.K. band would have nothing to sing about. Nick Cave-like crooner Liam McKahey lends Cousteau‘s flamboyant piano-, string-, and brass-accented tunes an engaging theatricality. But the tracks are loveliest when least overwrought: ”(Shades of) Ruinous Blue,” which rhymes ”pale luminescent face” with ”cumulescent grace,” is pure gothic hooey.
