Episode Recaps

Fans of old-fashioned musicals — where guys croon unabashedly about falling for girls, and girls warble pensively about finding Mr. Right — will have a thoroughly pleasant evening. The play follows Ella (Faith Prince), whose good, 1950s heart gets her overinvested in the lives of her answering-service clients. Despite plenty of spunk, Prince is miscast in this ingenue role. But it’s almost forgivable once Ella hooks up with her favorite customer, a roguish playwright played with charm by Marc Kudisch. Bells Are Ringing has as much depth as a palette of ’50s pastels, but, by golly, it knows it. It’s hammy, genial, and fairly silly — in other words, a welcome change of pace.
