During his long, decorated career, Navy diver Carl Brashear (Gooding) rescued a trapped sailor from a sunken ship, helped recover a lost hydrogen bomb, and survived leg amputation to become the Navy’s first black master diver. But he was at his bravest while enduring rampant racial prejudice throughout the ranks. Men of Honor, a somewhat stodgy biopic, charts too conventional a course in telling Brashear’s story, but Gooding’s impassioned stoicism — and De Niro’s tortured performance as Brashear’s brawling, bigoted training officer — put real feeling behind the spit and polish.
